1870s Army Service Corps soldier - maybe!

ASC Soldier from the 1870s by A F Gale, Winchester

The subject is wearing the the 'other ranks' five-button Indian pattern scarlet frock with collar patches and half-panel cuffs in Regimental facing colour. The bottom edge of the collar, the shoulder straps, and the cuff panels are braided white, with white trefoil knots up the sleeves. He also wears an 'other ranks' Glengarry cap.

The collar badge appears to be a Queens crown above an 8 pointed star and MAY indicate that the soldier served in the Army Service Corps, although the photo evidence is unclear.

Army Medical Department Officer - 1883

Stamped 'Jan 1883' by Adams & Stilliard, Southampton

Thanks to help on the Victorian Wars Forum (link in sites of interest) I now know that this carte shows an officer in the Army Medical Department, the forerunner of the RAMC. The 'sash' he wears is actually a pouchbelt similar to the one below. His single star indicates he is Lieutenant.

1886-1890 by Theodore Waltenberg

Thoedore Waltenberg was born in russia in 1856 and became a naturalized British subject in August 1890.

His studio was at 339 Bethnal Green Road from 1886-1890 and moved to 419 Bethnal Green Road from 1890-1931. From 1891-1900 he also had a second studio at 288 High Street, Stratford East, Essex.

This allows me to date the above picture to between 1886 and 1890.

This picture is interesting as the subject seems to be wearing an unusual uniform variation. He appears to be wearing an 1881 pattern 7 button, rounded collar serge frock (hip pockets, no front edging), but with the 'jampot' style cuffs of the 1881 pattern tunic.
